Scotland could be 2 seed at WC qualies
By: Ian Rose | September 27th, 2007After being drawn as the four-seed in the group of death in Euro 2008 qualifying, Scotland was understandably concerned. But now, after two wins over France and carrying a lead in the group into the final three games, our position is somewhat different. And we may have peaked at just the right time. The draw for World Cup qualifying takes place on November 24th, and Scotland is likely to be either a third, or possibly even a second seed if we can maintain our pace. I expect there to be struggles - in fact, I’m still not fully convinced we’ll qualify for Euros (We need a point against Italy that will be difficult to get, even at Hampden). But a second-seed would give Scotland a great chance to qualify for our first WC finals since 1998. We have to stay in the top 18 in Europe (now #11) to book a 2-seed, and with two monthly ranking cycles to go, it looks likely, but who knows if an old positive result will expire … the system has screwed us and many others before. Fingers are crossed, and if we can beat Ukraine in Glasgow on October 13th, we should be in. Luckily, the draw is only 1 week after the Italy match, and that match will not affect our ranking quickly enough to matter.
