Scotland in Europe - Copen just fine
By: Craig | December 6th, 2006
Tonight’s game generates a most congenial form of apathy, as for the first time in Champions League history, a Scottish club can go into the last group game knowing the result is immaterial having already qualified.
OK, it’s not completely irrelevant. If Manyoo dump Benfica out then three points are a must to stay top of the group, and thus get a second-placed team in the next stage. That sounds a noble endeavour until you realise that the five confirmed runners-up are, ahem, Barcelona, Inter Milan, PSV, Roma and Real Madrid. Just the 14 European Cups between them then…
So the big intrigue comes from two sources: Tommy Gravesen’s fan club; and the fact that the Hoops are, for the 12th time, just 90 minutes away from their first away win in the Champions League!
After all the qualifying near-misses suffered at the hands of the Juventuses, Milans and Munichs of this world, how ironic if Strachan were to do the business when it didn’t matter a jot.
