Scotland Needs Strikers (even if they’re 20)
By: Ian Rose | March 22nd, 2007Scotland needs strikers. Sounds a bit like “Mars Needs Women”. But unlike the 1967 sci-fi classic, this is a real live problem, and with no Yvonne Craig in sight to save us. Going into Saturday’s match against Georgia, and more importantly, Wednesday’s against Italy, the forward situation for the Tartan side is dismal at best. Kenny Miller is the most experienced foot we have in the position, with 29 international caps and 9 goals, but has spent his season at Celtic redefining the term “missed chance”. In fact, he has missed so many chances at scoring this season, the Celtic announcers have had to make up new words for missed chances, in order to not sound repetitive. (My suggestion of “Pulling a Kenny” has not yet caught on). Kris Boyd has had by far the best domestic season of the four (yes, only four) Scotland forwards, netting 19 goals for Rangers, but will be playing in only his 6th international match on Saturday. It won’t help that we’ll be without the services of possibly our best defender in Steven Pressley at the other end. What we need is to ignore his age and give Steven Naismith, probably the most exciting young forward in Scotland right now, a try. Beggars can’t be choosers, and the lad’s got moves.
