Scotland ranked 14th
By: Ian Rose | May 16th, 2007
For the first time in the modern ranking era, Scotland is ranked in the top fifteen national football sides in the world. Today, FIFA released its monthly rankings, which saw Scotland rise from 19th to 14th, the highest rank we have ever achieved. Congratulations to Alex McLeish and the entire Scottish national side! The 5-place rise was the biggest for any team in the top 50, and you have to go all the way down to number 61, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to find a bigger jump (an impressive 23 places!). The big loser in the top 50 was Chile, who dropped six places to 43rd.
Okay, technically it’s true that we didn’t actually play this month, and so we rose mostly due to points expiring for other teams. But still, over the past four years, Scotland is the 14th best team in the world. If we want to keep that position, or even overtake Cameroon for lucky 13th place, we’re going to have to play for it. We have a friendly against Austria on May 30th, and return to Euro 2008 qualifying against Faroe Islands on June 6th, both of which are very winnable (especially the Faroes) and both of which are before the next ranking comes out. Alba Gu Brath!
