Scotland tries out Rangers’ McGregor … temporarily …
By: Ian Rose | May 30th, 2007Alex McLeish will have a fresh face between the posts today as Scotland takes on Austria in the last international friendly before resuming Euro 2008 qualifying next week. Rangers starter Allan McGregor will get his first cap today, filling in for Craig Gordon, but everyone involved insists the job is not McGregor’s to compete for. Gordon is Scotland’s number one, regardless of Allan’s performance. McGregor, who was voted Rangers Players’ Player of the Year last month, agrees completely. He told Rangers World:
“Big Craigie is established and I can’t see the gaffer dropping him. I’ll show what I’ve got when I’m training with Scotland and if I get a chance in a friendly or whatever I’ll try to take it.”
After two seasons out on loan, to Pars and First Division runner-up St. Johnstone, McGregor beat out Lionel Letizi for the starting keeper job at Ibrox and is now, without question, the future at keeper for Rangers. For now, he’s happy to play understudy for the more experienced Gordon in the upcoming Euro qualies. It’s good to see a quality player that wants to play for his nation, but puts the team’s needs ahead of his own.
Good luck today, Allan, and the same to the entire Scottish side. Alba Gu Brath.
