Setanta relieves Old Firm tensions with a good throat-slashing
By: Ian Rose | October 23rd, 2007I just thought I would pass this along, in case it didn’t make the media outside of Scotland. Apparently, during Setanta’s coverage of last weekend’s Old Firm derby, there was an advert on that has ruffled some feathers. During halftime, with a huge domestic audience tuning in, a particularly graphic trailer for the David Cronenberg film Eastern Promises was shown, which included a scene with a football fan getting his throat cut from behind while peeing on a gravestone.
Nice.
We know there’s always going to be a few fights around derby time, but does it really seem like a great idea to show a football fan getting his throat cut right before the match? I’m not saying it’s going to inspire Hoops and Gers to go around cutting off each other’s gourds … but still. I think my fellow Caley Thistle fan Andrew Tod had it right when he told the Daily Record:
“I can only think it was some kind of cock-up by Setanta.
If they thought this was acceptable, then they are way off the mark.”
On a related point, “cock-up” continues to be far and away my favorite term for mistake. No doubt of it.

I remember using “cock-up” in a post earlier and getting an all-American smile out of it as well…

I was watching Liverpool-Everton at halftime of the match, so I missed the commercial. I did see the film though, and that scene didn’t have anything to do with football at all. Still, not a lot of thought given to the placement of the advertisement.
