Shocker of the day - Romanov wants changes
By: Ian Rose | May 3rd, 2007Well, as the SPL season comes to a close, ten teams are looking to improve on their 2007 season (while two are trying to just stay up at all, and avoid being replaced by promotion winner Gretna). Hearts owner (and part-time dangerous mental patient) Vladimir Romanov is no different, and surprise surprise, Vlad is calling for some changes this off-season. Namely, he says he needs a keeper, a midfielder and a striker. Let’s keep in mind that this is the same man who has fired four managers in two years, so statistically speaking, he’ll likely need at least one new manager as well. He’s certainly right about the keeper - Craig Gordon has made no secret of the fact that he is splitsville come summer, and will likely have a few Premiership offers to choose from. However, Romanov might be a little optimistic in thinking he’s a keeper, a midfielder and a striker away from success. Takis Fyssas is gone this summer, so that’s a defender to add to the list. The midfield will likely be strengthened by the addition of Laryea Kingston (but weakened by the loss of Julien Brellier). The striker position will be an interesting one to watch - Andrius Velicka has been their top scoring forward this year with an unimpressive seven goals, and the anemic Hearts offense is going to need more than one good foot. There is some talk that Jason Scotland from St. Johnstone could be interested in a move to Edinburgh, but he’s gotten some English attention as well, and Romanov will have to work for that signing, one of the most coveted in Scotland right now (and not just for the last name).
Frankly, with the number of great players leaving because of frustrations with Vlad’s crazy unique management style, the biggest change needed by Hearts is a new owner.

Want to bet that the keeper, midfielder and striker he want come from a certain club in Lithuania?

If he promotes Kurskis, his Lithuanian keeper, I’ll finally be convinced Hearts is nothing but a Lithuanian NT farm club to Romanov.

Is Alex Hleb’s brother still going over there? According to Wikipedia he’s at Kaunas now, so I assume he probably is.

Yeah, I think that in this case, Wikipedia is correct.
