Success a double-edged sword for Celtic
By: Ian Rose | April 26th, 2007It’s been a banner year for Celtic. Not only have they won the SPL for the second year in a row, but they are in the Scottish Cup final and reached the Round of 16 in the Champions League, and were only eliminated by AC Milan in extra time by a brilliant Kaka goal. Chairman Brian Quinn has said it’s the best Celtic season in 30-40 years, maybe since the legendary European Cup season of 1967. So, what’s the bad news?
Well, the Champions League is always a little dangerous for teams from small leagues. It gives the big boys, like La Liga and the Premiership, a prime-time look at their players and poaching inevitably follows. Celtic has the budget to outbid anyone in Scotland, but up against names like Arsenal and Barcelona?
A number of key players look to already be leaving Celtic for greener pastures. Well, nothing’s technically greener than Scotland. Let’s say … more profitable pastures. Shunsuke Nakamura is considering a move to Spain, keeper Artuc Boruc has been linked to a number of English premiership sides. Now, there’s news today that captain Neil Lennon will be leaving Celtic after this season. Yikes. Note to the champions of all the little leagues in Europe … be careful what you wish for.
