The Top Flight Tussle - Rangers v Dunfermline
By: Craig | November 10th, 2006
With the last seven days plunging Paul Le Guen and Rangers FC into chaos unparallelled since a Mr A.T. Hun decided he was in the mood for a scrap, every Gers match is now nothing short of fascinating.
I grew up in a period of utter domination by the Ibrox side, which saw them equal Celtic’s nine consecutive league titles and come excruciatingly close to the European Cup Final. Added to that a Celtic team rolling over obligingly and Rangers winning became as inevitable as a Rod Stewart covers album at Christmas. Yes, there have been leaner spells since, but at no time since 1997 have they appeared so inept at home for such a sustained period. And yet it has all come about under a man who deserved every rose thrown in his direction on stages French and European as manager of Lyon. But reputation means diddly-squat these days to the fans, who have made it clear that the honeymoon is most definitely over.
The recipe for disaster tomorrow is certainly a tasty one. Dunfermline will not so much roll into Glasgow as crawl, sitting bottom of the league and without a manager for almost three weeks (Stephen Kenny’s expected appointment has thus far failed to materialise). Yet Wednesday night proved that nothing is impossible any more and for the first time in ages, a bottom-of-the-table side can reasonably expect three points from a visit to Ibrox. Le Guen, meanwhile, needs defeat like Dylan needs The Idiot’s Guide to Songwriting for Christmas.
