This just in: Scots like to drink.
By: Ian Rose | April 2nd, 2007From the Herald:
Scotland may have lost its match with Italy, but that didn’t stop the Tartan Army, our loyal and boisterous traveling fans, from enjoying themselves. A lot. Apparently, the 7,000 fans that made the trip to Bari for the 2-0 loss last Wednesday drank a grand total of 265,000 pints of beer in three days. That’s an average of 12 pints per person per day. Often cited as the friendliest fans in world football, the Scots spent over 2 million quid on their trip, more than the hotels, restaurants and pubs of Bari make in an average winter. Surprisingly to the authorities but not to anyone with first-hand experience of the Tartan Army, not a single public order problem was reported. No fights, no riots, nothing, and these folks had just traveled by air to watch their side lose without scoring a goal.
Tomorrow, as I watch the Champions League matches on TV, I will drink my first pint to the fans of Scotland. Whatever can be said about a few Rangers fans and their sectarian nonsense, these fans represented us well, both in terms of their inhuman tolerance for alcohol and their legendary friendliness and good manner.
