Ugliest shirts in SPL history
By: Ian Rose | August 31st, 2007Yeah, I know. It’s an overdone blogging subject, but I am celebrating my triumphant return to the interwebs today and I figured I would go looking for some butt-ugly SPL jerseys from years past. Here’s how I’m scoring them. First, a 1 to 10 of ugly. Pure ugly. Then, I’m deducting a tenth of a point for each year ago the jersey was worn, because let’s face it, a jersey can’t be blamed for being ugly in the eighties. Everything was. So here goes. Let’s limit it to five.
Motherwell 1995-96
Base ugly score: 7 - 1.2 for age = 5.8
Worst quality: The sleeves remind me of a Taco Bell ad.

Dundee United 1993-94 Away
Base ugly score: 8 - 1.4 for age = 6.6
Worst quality: It’s almost sort of cool. But in the end, it’s just too ink-blotty. And I think I see a skull.

Celtic 1991-92 Away
Base ugly score: 9 - 1.6 for age = 7.4
Worst quality: This is not only ugly, but also a terrible bit of marketing. Did Ford really want to advertise how badly its
stock was doing with that graphic? Yikes.

Kilmarnock 1990-91 Home
Base ugly score: 6 - 1.7 for age = 4.3
Worst quality: Is this actually tie-dyed? Seriously, can a Killie fan tell me … is it?

Hibernian 1992-93 Away
Base ugly score: 7 - 1.5 for age = 5.5
Worst quality: Combines the awful color of the Killie shirt and the Tex-Mex sleeves of Motherwell.

So, the Rorschach from Dundee United is just edged out by Celtic’s God-awful Sales-Figure jersey. Thoughts?

I would love to see YouTube clips of any of those jerseys in motion. The Dundee United one is my favourite.Posted from

Honestly, how can those happen? Will we be looking back at today’s kits, fifteen years from now and saying the same thing? I can’t see how that’ll happen. Fuck, those are ugly!

I don’t think we’ll look back and say the same thing, just because we’re going through sort of a conservative time in terms of design in general right now. Everyone’s into simplicity. Give us a few years, and I’m sure gaudiness will come back into style. At least none of these have tassels.

Oh, except for Chelsea. The day-glo away jersey is daring, but nonetheless, ugly as sin.
