Ugly Rangers postpone Celtic party for two weeks
By: Ian Rose | April 8th, 2007I know a guy on one of the big Scottish football forums whose signature with each post all season said “Celtic - Champions before Easter”. Isn’t his face red? Despite their early dominance of the SPL this season, the Hoops of Celtic will have to wait another two weeks to become official champions of the league. Rangers could have handed them the victory today, but no, they had to beat a struggling St. Mirren (granted only 1-nil, they made it interesting) to remain 13 points behind Celtic with 5 matches left. At this point, it would take an unprecedented slide by Celtic, 5 straight losses, to keep Rangers in the hunt, but the way they’re playing, Rangers winning their remaining five may be even less likely. Even at Ibrox, where they were once mighty, they now seem suspect. 1-0 is a fine win against most SPL sides, but not St. Mirren, not a squad four points away from relegation, a squad that might let Dunfermline stay in the league despite a complete lack of offense. No, this was a poor win, maybe the poorest win possible, and though it did postpone the inevitable at least two weeks (next weekend is Scottish Cup semifinals - YAY), it also showed why the final result IS so inevitable. Rangers are simply not on par with Celtic this season, and if they continue to play like this (aka, on par with St. Mirren), they’ll be lucky to hold onto second.
