Wantaways take note

By: Craig | November 29th, 2006

pearson.jpgThree years ago, it’s fair to say things were looking up for Stephen Pearson. Man-of-the-match performances for Motherwell, a recent Scotland call-up and boyhood heroes Celtic apparently knocking on the door. When he signed in January 2004, he was met with the usual chorus of scepticism about a promising Scot being dumped on the Old Firm scrapheap.

Yet for the rest of that season, the Ging of the Wing set about stuffing notepads down stunned hacks’ throats. He was a key man in Celtic’s two-legged victory over Barcelona while managing to put in weekly appearances. All of a sudden, Celtic couldn’t afford to be Pear-less.

Surely it couldn’t last. And it didn’t. Gordon Strachan, of all people, was particularly unsympathetic to his hair-sake and the appearances soon dried up, along with the caps. Six starts and eight substitute appearances are all he has to show so far this season.

Thus, it appears Celtic are finally ready to let him go for a cool £1million, though whether current suitors Derby County and Sunderland are a step up is another matter.

All of which, you would think, would be warning enough to Hibs’ Scott Brown and Kevin Thomson, expected subjects of the next big Old Firm raid. Not so. With Hibs refusing to go above £1500/week, they’ll know where the money is. But the games?
