Will Gretna ‘08 be the SPL’s worst ever?
By: Ian Rose | September 29th, 2007We are now through eight weeks of SPL action, except for the St. Mirren-Hearts match tomorrow, and with Caley Thistle’s win today and Gretna’s loss, Gretna takes their place where many in Scotland expected them to be, in the 12th-place relegation spot. Gretna surprised everyone in Scotland by jumping up three levels in as many years, a record in Scottish football, but could they be poised on the precipice of another record, the one for worst SPL season ever?
Granted, we’re only just over 1/5 of the way through the season, but current trends do look a bit dangerous for Gretna. The current record for futility in the SPL was set only two years ago, when Livingston achieved only 18 points in 38 matches, with a goal differential of -54. They lost by a whopping 15 points to eleventh-place Dunfermline, who followed them into relegation last season.
At the current rate, Gretna (4 points in 8 matches; -13 GD) is on pace for 19 points and an amazingly poor goal differential of -61. That’s just barely over the mark set by Livingston ‘06. Their shock win over Dundee United is the only thing keeping them above it.
For myself, I’m not sure Gretna is quite poor enough to beat out Livingston, but time will tell. Their matches against other bottom sides like Inverness, Falkirk and St. Mirren will be the most telling, although with all of their points so far coming from last season’s top 6 teams, they might just play spoiler against some high mid-table teams.

Ok. Ok. Thats not take a few jibes a Livi before mentioning the fact that Livi finished 3rd in the SPL in their first season in the top flight and played some of the best attacking football in the early 00’s. Poor back room management and business deals killed the club for a period when we lost all of the really good players we poached from ayr or whoever it was when they went into administration.
Gretna for the worst recored ever. Please we dont want it anymore.

No, mate. I didn’t mean to be too hard on Livi. I’m pulling for them for an eventual return to the SPL, but that was one awful season, start to finish.
