Young Firm derby ends in a frustrating draw
By: Ian Rose | October 14th, 2007As we count down the days to perhaps the oldest and greatest rivalry game in sport, the Old Firm derby between Rangers and Celtic, another clash of the Glasgow titans has already taken place. Celtic and Rangers faced each other in the Under-19 SPL Youth League on Saturday, playing to a draw in a match with all the pressure and anger of an Old Firm derby, without all those people. In total, 320 attended this match, the first-ever clash between these two sides at Auchenhowie pitch. After going into the half at 1-1, the second half seemed just as even-handed. The lead never belonged to Celtic, but they were always able to equalize. Rangers looked to have broken them late in the match, but a 78th-minute long range goal from Celtic’s Graham Carey put it even at 3-3, where it would end. Despite the crowd size, there were police barriers and no-man zones around the pitch, giving you some idea of how seriously this rivalry is taken, and some concept of the preparations necessary when the big boys play next weekend. Multiply the crowd by 150, and add a mix of pre-match drinking and lifelong inter-club hatred, and you have the spectacle at Ibrox. Let the week of craziness begin.
