Scot Cup 4th round: Replays and more replays
By: Ian Rose | January 13th, 2008I’d like to be writing that the 4th round of the Scottish Cup was in the bag, but it really isn’t. Between weather postponements and draws, the round is barely even underway. A total of eight matches had to be called for weather this weekend as a nasty patch of winter rain, sleet and snow crossed over much of Scotland. Four more matches ended in draws, and will need to be replayed.
A few winners
Only four clubs are now guaranteed a place in the fifth round. St. Mirren beat Dumbarton 3-0, and Celtic took out Stirling Albion by the same scoreline. Hibs registered another 3-0 win over Caley Thistle, dashing Inverness’ last hopes for a trophy this season. Queen of the South won 4-0, ending the Cinderella run of Linlithgow Rose.
Well survives
In their first match back since the tragic death of captain Phil O’Donnell, Motherwell started very poorly, going down two goals to Hearts almost immediately. But an inspired second half brought both goals back and finished the match 2-2. The tie will now go back to Fir Park in late January.
Fixture problems for Rangers
Because of the rain postponement today, and their already stacked schedule, Rangers are facing some very busy weeks ahead. The Old Firm derby, originally rescheduled for January 23, will have to be moved again because that date is for Scottish Cup replays. Now it looks like March before there is an opening.
So, we know very little that we didn’t know before. 3 SPL sides and First Division Queen of the South are all in, but twelve matches remain to be decided, including six involving SPL teams. That’s the winter in Scotland … sometimes you get lucky and the rain comes on Thursdays, most of the time not.
